Sixth Form provision from September 2018
Unfortunately, at present, sixth form provision at The Whitehaven Academy (TWA) is simply not viable due to low numbers, which in turn means TWA are not able to offer the broad and balanced curriculum that the students deserve. So, in order to provide a solution to the current students, Cumbria Education Trust (CET) and TWA have worked together to offer an interim option for our students, with a view that once the school regains its momentum, our sixth form provision will be reinstated on-site.
An offer has been put forward to deliver a sixth form education for our students at CET’s nearby Workington Academy (WA) from September. Students would remain on the school roll at TWA but would study for Level 3 / A-Level qualifications at WA. The time they spend at WA will be determined by the number of courses they choose to study.
We are very supportive of this proposal because it is a local interim solution; the standard of facilities at Workington Academy are excellent and most importantly, the sixth form was recently awarded a ‘Good’ judgement by Ofsted and its KS4 and KS5 results are solidly good and improving. The range of courses on offer for our students is excellent.
George Beveridge, Chair of the Local Advisory Board (LAB), also fully supports this move, noting that this is an excellent offer for the students at this current time. He thanked CET and TWA staff for working together to bring about a solution that enables TWA Sixth Form to continue until it is self-sustainable.
Mr Keep has been pivotal to the work undertaken with CET and their staff to bring about this local offer for our students and will continue to be fully involved in supporting the Sixth Form students in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact him should you want to discuss any aspects of this offer, including the choice of courses. His email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
