Maintaining every day, regular routines wherever possible, such as, attending school and lessons whilst working towards managing mental health is vitally important. At the Whitehaven Academy we offer a wide range of support to help students develop positive mental health, wellbeing and resilience, in order to encourage a positive healthy mindset. Looking after your mental health is just as important as looking after your physical health.

In addition to our existing pastoral team, a number of other staff have also been trained in Mental Health First Aid. These staff wear the green ribbon badge (the symbol of the Mental Health Foundation). Students can easily identify these staff when they need to talk about their wellbeing.

Having a holistic approach is key, building a culture and ethos that promotes and supports mental health and wellbeing is one of out main priorities. The word ‘mental’ is often avoided because it is argued that this gives of a negative atmosphere. We do not believe that this word should be shied away from. A key task for us is to destigmatise the term and promote positive mental health throughout the Academy and the community.

It is important that we all work together to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing, through a carefully planned programme of assemblies, form discussions, lesson, support agencies and sign posting.  We know our students want greater support.  We display relevant information around the academy on notice boards and share links via emails or the website, this is our way of signposting the relevant information.
