Many of our Year 9 students are currently in Europe on a Battlefields Visit. Yesterday they spent the day on the Ypres Salient.
They started at the Menin Gate then visited ‘In Flanders’ Fields’ Museum, Tyne Cot British and Commonwealth cemetery, Langemark German cemetery and Ljissenthoek Military cemetery and former hospital site. Mrs Coleman, Mr Ismay, Mr Smith and Mrs Hammell were very impressed with students’ thoughtfulness and respectfulness.
On Thursday evening, Chloe and Alex took part in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Students and staff watched as they represented the Whitehaven Academy brilliantly by laying a wreath with a message written by Holly. They were a credit to themselves and the academy and the other students watching were very proud of them, as were the staff. Well done!
On the third day of their trip they visited the Somme. This included Serre Road, Ulster Tower, Thiepval Memorial, Lochnagar Crater and the Neuve Chapelle Indian Memorial along with a very special visit to Chloe’s great great grandfather’s grave at Baupaume Post Military Cemetery. They were all incredibly honoured to be there for this very moving experience for her. To honour a man from Cumbria in this way was a privilege. Lest we forget.
