Our amazing Year 7 students have received first place out of 130 schools in the national Engineering Carbon Net Zero Competition run by Atkins.
The students researched, built a model of their design for a carbon net zero school in Minecraft. The assessors were clearly impressed by the students’ design and invited them to the final where they presented their ideas to a panel of three expert engineers.
Their clear presentation and innovative design ensured they came first in their category. The Atkins assessors said: “We were so impressed by the effort the students had gone to and their enthusiasm for their solution. We were particularly impressed by how well-considered the idea was and the work the students have done to try and get their ideas used in the new school development”. The students should be proud of their achievement as we are of them. Click on the link to see the student’s design:

In coming first place, the students have won £200 for the school to spend on resources to promote sustainability and a drone visit for the day.
We would like to thank the Atkins mentors, some of which were ex Whitehaven Academy students, and Wates for their support of our students. We look forward to working closely with these companies in the future to provide other exciting opportunities for our students.
