Year 7 and 8 students have banded together to enter the First Lego League with the Institute of Engineering for the first time ever. Meeting with a STEM Ambassador from React Engineering, the students learnt the basic rules of the year-long competition, heard about the skills and history of the competition before diving into building key elements of the lego playboard. The competition will involve three elements: the Lego Robot mission leg, where students will develop an understanding of robotics, programming, strategic thinking and project management in their quest to complete as many missions as possible using a Mindstorm Robot; A real-life problem where they must overcome a problem found in society and design methods to make life a little easier; and, incorporating core values of the First Lego League, including collaboration, community spirit, etc. The students are raring to go and have already started building four of the mission pieces. More to follow as we progress through the competition.
